Bearing Witness

Came across this on a freethinker blog and thought it was very compelling.

"There’s a song by David Bazan – someone who has also gone through a major faith transition – that fully understands the position that freethinking parents find themselves in. His song, Bearing Witness, captures exactly how I feel as a parent, but also repurposes religious vernacular to offer encouragement to those who have chosen a rational and logical belief system, and parenting style.
I clung to miracles I have not seen
From ancient autographs I cannot read
And though I’ve repented
I’m still tempted, I admit
But it’s not what bearing witness is

Too full of prophecy and fear to see
The revelation right in front of me
So sick and tired of trying to make the pieces fit
Because it’s not what bearing witness is

When the gap between
What I hoped would be
And what is makes me weep for my kids
I take a cleansing breath
And make a positive confession
But is that what bearing witness is

Though it may alienate your family
And blur the lines of your identity
Let go of what you know
And honor what exists
Son, that’s what bearing witness is
Daughter, that’s what bearing witness is.

Morality-what is good and evil

I was thinking about the foundation of all monotheistic theology;  the Judgment. The part of religion where it is stated that there are some strict Moral rules in the universe, enforced (either passively or actively) by God and at the end of life you will be judged according to these rules.

Does there exist some Great Moral Order that is outside the universe and could only come from God? The Catholic church teaches that morality is not found in nature, animals have no 10 commandments and simply follow their natural instincts for survival.
In his book Mere Christianity, C. S. Lewis argued that "conscience reveals to us a moral law whose source cannot be found in the natural world, thus pointing to a supernatural Lawgiver."
Basically, conscience makes people act in a manner that sometimes goes against their own interests. This is unnatural and can only come from God.

I disagree with this argument. For the simple reason that we need not look outside nature to find morality. It is present in any social organism from monkey troupes to dolphin pods.
When evolution came up with a social organism it HAD to create natural laws to govern the social interaction between those organisms, otherwise the social order that allowed the organism to thrive would break down. Meaning that for any animal to survives in a highly ordered group, like say a pack of wolves, they must be programmed to naturally put the survival of the group above that of the individual (in certain circumstances). For example, many adults coming together to protect younger ones from a predator. Any one of the adults might be injured or even killed in the attack but it is far better for the Social unit (pack, pride, herd ,flock) to lose one adult than to lose the young. This would be considered a moral act (For there is no greater sacrifice than to lay down one's life for another) but it is visible everyday on the savannah.

Humans are social organisms, evolved from social organisms. The very same mechanisms that are at work on a band of gorillas are at work on us as well. We are pushed to put the welfare of our society ahead of individual interest in certain circumstances. That is simple evolution.
In fact I believe that it is possible to substitute the term "Moral" with the phrase "good for human civilization as a whole" and "immoral" with "bad for human civilization as a whole" . Why do we not kill? because it would be bad for human civilization as a whole if everyone started killing each other.  Why do we not steal? because it would be bad for human civilization as a whole if everyone started stealing from each other...etc

Let's have a look at the 10 commandments (King James Version)  and see whether it is necessary for them to have come from outside nature. Or are they simply a very concise list of things that ANY society of social organisms must adhere to in order to survive?
1.
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Assuming none of these were divine revelations, this is easily explained as a way to preserve the Jewish religion. That it comes first should be a clue as to the aim of the whole document.

2.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

Again, another way of preserving the Jewish religion. At the time that this was written all competing faiths used Statues and Idols to symbolize their Gods. This was the Jews way of setting themselves apart. Notice the dire threats from the "loving" God.

3.
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Another Jewish practice. No Objective morality here.

4.
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Another Jewish practice. No Objective morality here.

5.
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

A simple way to ensure that the old are cared for by the young, in order to provide leadership and stability in society even after they have grown too old to do physical labor. Elephants have been seen to do this.

6.
Thou shalt not kill.

A no brainer. Any society, even insects that don't obey this rule within their society, die out. There is no way to preserve a society without a taboo on killing each other.

7.
Thou shalt not commit adultery.

For any animal that mates for life (as humans naturally do) preserving that union and its offspring is very important to the society. The family unit becomes the smallest unit in the social order. In the case of man, adultery causes the natural feelings of jealousy and often sparks violence among members of a society. This is of course counterproductive to the continuance of that society therefore it is considered "immoral"

8.
Thou shalt not steal.

Any society that does not respect private property shall descend into anarchy immediately. This is especially true for humans. even pirates respect the rights of ownership of other pirates in their group, if they did not, the group would cease to exist.

9.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

This comes down to trust. The members of one society should be able to trust each other if they are to survive times of hardship. Without trust then there is no safety, without safety in numbers there is no society.  It is implicit even in a pride of lions. A female can trust her young to another female of the pride. Trusting that she will not simply abandon or eat them.

10.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

This ties into the rights of private ownership. In this case it deal with a problem that plagues humans and most higher primates, also some birds. That of jealousy.  a human will grow jealous of another's possessions, the next step to that is to seek to acquire said possession by theft if necessary. Theft can lead to violence and violence to anarchy. It may also say something about Jewish society that they required so many commandments dealing with theft or the desire to steal.

What this shows is that there is no inherent GOODNESS in the 10 commandments. They are simply laws that are (somewhat) required for any human society to survive. Or any animal society for that matter.
These commandments were not aimed at some higher reward, but to help ensure the stability of humanity right here on earth. These are things ANY ruler would require of he was to keep his kingdom going.
And what is the best way to give these rules authority? Say they are from God and unchallengeable.
Furthermore morality is EVOLUTIONARILY REQUIRED for the development of a social organism. Morals and sense of "right" and "wrong" are natural laws engraved upon our genes, like height, skin colour etc. They need no outside source in order to exist.

So if Morality and conscience does not require an ever watchful, judging God in order for them to exist. What does that say about Christian theology? what then, is the point of it all?

So who am I talking to exactly?

Hi

Hey..

OH MY GOD THERES DEMONS AND SHIT COMING TO GET YOU!!!!!!

WHAT?

They're from a parallel universe! When you die you go there and they make you pay horribly for all the bad things you've done....

What?

yup...bad things over there, you don't want any part of them.

I don't?

Nope.

Okay what do I do?

Give me your utter obedience and devotion and I will reward you with protection from the bad things in the other universe that I created for you.

Wait..you created them?

Wait! Did I tell you how BAAAD things are over there? Real bad man. There's like fire and demons and butt-stuff over there.

But you said that you creat...

AND! and, I can like, totally help you out over here too man.

you can?

yeah dude. Just like, pray and stuff and I guarantee that I'll totally hook you up with whatever you want man.

Anything?

well....not exactly anything....it would kinda have to be already coming to you....you know...destiny and all that

So will I get what I pray for or not?

........Maybe....if you're reeeeaaaallly sure that you'll get it. I will probably give it to you.

If I'm sure.... Okay. I'm sure I you'll give me an end to disease and needless suffering in the world. Even you want that right?

errrmmmmm....

RIGHT?

Lets call it 50/50 on the whole prayers thing...

What?

you win some...you lose some....eh

WTF? so no end to suffering?

Not so much....

So what do I get?

Ermmm...here I'll do this...I'll give your pastor a HUGE mansion and a Mercedes Benz so that you can feel happy that you belong to a church where I am doing miracles and such...

That doesn't seem terribly fair....

AND!...let me finish...And.....remember that job promotion you wanted? That one you've been steadily working your way up the corporate ladder for? The one that you were passed up for last year because they wanted someone younger but they got sick on the eve of a crucial presentation and the company almost lost their biggest client? And you called and begged the client for another meeting and spent a week without sleep to prepare the required documents and made a killer presentation and the company got its biggest order yet? Remember how much that pleased management? Remember how they subsequently gave you the promotion you wanted?

Yeah I remember that...

all that man? ALL Me dude.

What?

Yup. Impossible for you...Possible for Me. For there is no power but of Me.

Wow.

Yes...I am fantastic.

So about those bad things...?

REAL bad things man. Heavy shit.

Okay...Can I see them?

Not in this life.

So they're invisible?

Sorta...

So will I have any proof of their or for that matter your existence before I die?

Nope...Not from me at least...plenty of people will claim to know or have seen but I can neither confirm nor deny any of it till you're safely dead.

I see....

C'mon buddy, I sense you're losing faith here.....remember that job? huh? remember that? you were never going to get that without me.

I guess you could be right....

No, trust me on this. You can achieve nothing on your own man. Your full of bad sins and shit. Bad stuff man. You're like basically the worst thing there is. Like a fountain of poop ........ a Pountain. All humans are...without me that is.

really?

Yeah dude, think about uhhh...rape. Rapes pretty bad, people do that you know.

That is pretty shitty....

There you go. But I can make you better. I can make you whole! and much less poopy.

Okay! I believe! what do I have to do????

Just give money to literally ANYONE who mentions my name to you! You gotta reap before you can sow right?

AMEN!!!!!!!!

The Short Story of DOOOM!

Sorry to harp on about one topic but I've just thought of a good metaphor I can use for all my problems with Christianity.
It takes the form of a short story, so I'll write the story first and the explanation after.
---

Imagine the universe is a school. God is the Teacher and you are a pupil. Life is the classes and every exam is a test of morality.

Say The Teacher one day gave an exam that would test all the knowledge that the pupils had learned throughout the class.

The Teacher  sets the pass mark to 99.99999999999961 percent. Knowing full well that the pupils cannot attain that. As punishment for each failure The Teacher plans to administer corporal punishment. Say, 10 strokes of the cane for every percentage point below the pass mark. But soon The Teacher realizes that all the pupils are failing and the debt of punishment grows waaaay to high to humanely administer. The Teacher then DECIDES that the only thing that will suffice is for Him to punch Himself repeatedly in the face with a chalk board eraser. He does nothing at first but occasionally sends his messengers to the students, telling them that they better pass "or else!"

When The Teacher can't bear to contemplate the ludicrously brutal beatings He'd have to administer, He dashes into the exam room and valiantly smashes Himself in the face with the eraser. As He does so He explains to the students that He is doing this for them. To save them from the terrible beatings awaiting them because of His own made-up grading requirements. He loves them and does not want them to die beneath the stroke of His cane. He then passes out from the head trauma.

He awakes 3 hours later, looking refreshed. He proclaims that now All the students will pass, all they have to do is Try their absolute hardest. Just that. Try really hard and you will pass, but if you don't try really hard then you shall fail, by His arbitrary standards. How does he quantify and grade all this "trying"? He never tells the students. He then promises to come back one day and give them a FINAL exam that will end all exams, before floating off to delighted laughter from the children.

The Teacher pauses only briefly to adjust his grading scale to a more realistic 50% to allow for more of His pupils to pass. Then He continues to administer the same lessons He did before, to the same students in the same classroom.

THE END
--

I feel that this is a fairly accurate analogy of the essence of Christianity. My justification is below:

--
Imagine the universe is a school. God is the teacher and you are a pupil. Life is the classes and every CAT is a test of morality.
Say God one day gave a final exam (Death and judgment) that would test all the knowledge that the pupils had learned throughout the class.

In Christianity we are told that Jesus came to offer us everlasting life and stop us from perishing.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that everyone believing into Him should not perish, but have everlasting life"
This is to say that before Jesus, we perished (The pupils could not pass the exam). But after Jesus we have everlasting life (pass the exams)
Seems straight forward...

In order to do this, Jesus had to suffer and die as the "Ultimate Sacrifice" to God so as to wipe away the huge debt of sins that humans have. BUT God is also... Jesus. Aaaaand the whole debt-of-sin thing is ENTIRELY created by God as his own celestial accounting system. Literally we would NEVER HAVE KNOWN ABOUT IT IF HE DID NOT TELL US. That is how little meaning it really has.

It's like the teacher setting an exam for the students but setting the pass mark to 99.99999999999961 percent.
Remember that at no point are the pupils even aware of any of this, all they know is the class and the exams.
He does nothing at first but occasionally sends his messengers to the students, telling them that they had better pass "or else!" The many, many repentance prophets.
Finally when the Teacher can't bear to contemplate the ludicrously brutal beatings He'd have to administer, He dashes into the exam room and valiantly smashes Himself in the face with the eraser.

He proclaims that now All the students will pass, all they have to do is Try their absolute hardest (have faith) just that. Try really hard and you will pass, but if you don't try really hard to pass then you shall fail by my standards (seems a tad self-evident). He then promises to come back one day and give the FINAL exam before floating off to delighted laughter from the children. The children never stopped to question why any of this mattered to them, seeing as Teacher/God was the solution AND the problem.

The Teacher pauses only briefly to adjust his grading scale to a more realistic 50% to allow for more of His pupils to pass. Then He continues to administer the same lessons He did before, to the same students in the same classroom. From the students perspective NOTHING EVER CHANGED.

So then, what was the point??????????????

THE END

Kindly leave a comment and let me know if theres anything you'd like to correct me on. Or if you just think I have this all backward, I'd appreciate if you let me know. Thanks.

What really Matters....

Jesus came and gave us only 2 things that can REALLY affect our lives. He told us To love God, our Creator and love our neighbor as ourselves.

He said forsaking all else, we should remember that and we'll be alright.

THAT WAS THE MESSAGE. All the other things he said or did are meaningless to us. Only these words really matter.
But what is Christianity really about? We spend 90% of our time doing rituals! Pray to be healed, go to church, celebrate feast days, tithe, sing, pray for more money, talk in tongues, prophecy, exorcise demons, mimic healing in the name of Jesus etc .... Of course we all know what's important but where do we focus? Are there more "Love your neighbor campaigns" or more "Miracle crusades"?
Where are the big holidays commemorating Loving your neighbor? or Loving God? What we have are holidays about pointless trivia like birthdays and times of death. It's all about JESUS CHRIST WAS BORN ON CHRISTMAS DAY and we should probably..like love each other or something and love the Creator as well..I guess.
Isn't it obvious why the world is so fucked up, yet predominantly Christian? We're ALL doing it wrong.
--Disclaimer-- I still love Christmas, Its fun, and when is fun ever pointless?
